Setting and Sticking to Sustainable Goals

fitness goals

The holiday season has come and gone and you are left feeling slightly plumper with your jeans that little bit harder to do up.  As you curl up in the warmth on your sofa, watching the TV, you think about all the healthy things you are going to kick into action as soon as the clock strikes 12 on January the 1st. This year will be different clean eating and the gym will be your new best friend. Whilst promises to yourself of leading a healthy lifestyle are great steps in the right direction, setting expectations too high is only setting yourself up for failure and disappointment.

Set realistic goal

Goals and Goal setting can make or break an individual’s progress in fitness. They can serve as either great motivation, or be complete motivational killer. When setting goals for yourself always be mindful, as the goals you set will have a dramatic impact on your success mentally and physically. Here are some tips to help you set realistic goals to ensure you reach them and feel fantastic.

  1. Make sure that the goals you set are specific. Setting clear goals will help with understanding the task at hand, measure results, and ensure success.
  2. Make sure to set realistic and attainable goals. The goal should be difficult and challenging enough to prove motivating, but not so challenging that it’s impossible to achieve.
  3. Setting unhealthy and realistic goals can prove as a real motivation killer, as you will feel low if you can’t reach them, as they are impossible to be reached in the first place. This is why setting daily, weekly, and even monthly goals is so important.
  4. Take baby steps towards your long-term goals by creating reasonable daily goals that will be easy to achieve. When setting daily goals it is important to set a time to get this goal accomplished. Setting your workout time is a perfect example of this. Set the time, and stick to it no matter what. This will help keep you motivated and stay on track as you smash your goals one day at a time, ultimately leading you to smashing your main goal.
  5. Plan ahead, by planning ahead you are able to stay in control of your situation. Food prepping is a great example of this.
  6. Be kind to yourself. The fact that you are wanting to change and become a healthier version of you is awesome in the first place! Celebrate your successes and don’t beat yourself up if you fall off track. The main thing is, is that you keep on going and get back on. Consistency is key!
  7. Don’t compare yourself to others. This goes for anything in life, comparing yourself to others only sets you up for failure. You will never be the same as someone else and that’s a good thing! Love your body, it’s the only place you have to live in, feed it healthy food to nourish your body and exercise because it makes you feel fit and strong.
  8. Remember that this is a lifestyle and not a short term faddy diet. Good things and new habits take time to put into place. Don’t give up! Pushing through and staying consistent will lead to amazing results, where the benefits will be endless. Remember you are in control, you decide what goes into your mouth and when you exercise.

When setting your goals always think SMAR

S – Specific – The more specific you can be with writing down your objective, the easier it will be to clearly see what it is you need to accomplish. Often, answering the five “W” questions—Who, What, Where, Why, and Which—can help you achieve greater specificity.

M – Measurable – Can your goal be measured? How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal?

A – Attainable – Another way of putting this is “realistic.” Is it possible to achieve the goal you’ve set for yourself?

R – Relevant – A relevant goal in fitness means that it has the potential to impact your weight loss, strength, flexibility or cardio pulmonary health.

T – Time-bound – Give your goal a deadline.

Always remember why you started this and where you want to get to. You are in control and you get out what you put in. Remember anything that is worth having, is worth sticking with! So keep it up and you will be amazed at your results. The body achieves what the mind believes. Enjoy the process and enjoy the feeling of your body getting fitter and stronger, as you get healthier!
